They sat at the dining room table after he first introduced himself to her mother and shook her hand. Margaret smiled at him and went back to her solitaire game.

“Does it matter to you how much of this your mother hears?” Packard asked, lowering his voice as they took their seats.

“She’s not paying attention to us,” Carrie said. “Our conversation won’t register with her at all.”

Packard went on to recap all the leads he had followed since Bill was murdered. “We’ve examined his phone, his work computer, his email, his truck. Nothing points to a suspect. The closest thing we have to a motive is that he made a large withdrawal from the business account he and Roger set up together and lost it at a poker game.”

“He loved going to the casino. I wouldn’t go with him.”

“This was a private game. I interviewed everyone there that night. No one appears to have a motive to kill your husband.”

“What about Roger?”

“Roger was angry about Bill taking the money but not enough to kill his best friend. He’s got an alibi for the night of the murder. It’s thin, but I don’t think it was Roger.”

He looked like he was waiting for her to say something else. She didn’t know what to say. “What else have you found?”

“You told me Bill got home around midnight that night.”

“That’s right. He was with Roger.”

“That’s what he told you, but it wasn’t true.”

“Where was he?” Carrie asked.

Packard waited for her to figure it out for herself. “He was with Sherri,” Carrie said, recalling her sister’s outburst at the funeral the day before.

Packard nodded.

“You found out how?”

He told her about the texts on Bill’s phone and that Sherri’s number was saved under Roger’s name and the confusion it had initially caused. “Sherri lied to me about what she was doing that night. She changed her story when I came back and confronted her with the evidence from Bill’s phone.”

“And this was an ongoing thing between them?” Carrie said.

“Seems so. There’s something else you should know if you don’t already.”

“What’s that?”

“Bill had life insurance through work. Sherri is the primary beneficiary. His sister Wendy is listed as the secondary.”

Carrie felt her nostrils flare involuntarily as she took in a deep breath. “He didn’t get that job until after we were married so that was a very conscious choice he made.” She knew Bill had a small policy on her with himself as the beneficiary. That he’d turn around and direct his life insurance to her sister made her blood boil. She crossed her arms and scratched her shoulder to keep from making fists. “Isn’t that your motive? Sherri killed Bill for the life insurance.”

“I don’t know if she knows she’s the beneficiary. I haven’t talked to her about it. The insurance company won’t pay anything out until the investigation is closed. That said, I guess I just don’t see it. She had sex with him the night he died. She seemed pretty distraught at the funeral.
