Chapter Thirty-Five
Hanging up, I said, âDerrick, you got anyone at the DMV that would run a quick report?â
âDepends how detailed. Whatâs up?â
âTalbot was in a car accident with someone driving a Lamborghini. According to what he told one of his friends, the guy was some kind of thug and threatened to kill him if he called the cops.â
âPeople are frigging crazy. What are we looking for?â
âA white Lamborghini. See how many are in the county and if we can get a registration list.â
âOkay, I think Manny Sokol can help us.â
âGreat.â
I punched a number into my cell.
âHello, Frank.â
âHi, Ann. Look, I learned that your husband was in a minor car accident a couple of weeks before he disappeared. What can you tell me about it?â
âIt wasnât a big deal. Johnâs car had no damage, and he didnât report it to the insurance company. John said he was going to pay to fix the other car.â
âDid he say anything about the other driver?â
âJust that he was angry. John said it was an expensive Italian car. Not a Ferrari, the other oneââ
âLamborghini?â
âYes. You donât see many of them on the road.â
That was true, but it had nothing to do with the three-hundred-thousand-dollar price tag. The old, rich guys simply couldnât get in and out of them.
âAnd John never said anything more about it?â
âNo. Just the guy was going to get an estimate, and since it was Johnâs fault, heâd pay for the damages.â
âHe ever mention when or how he was paying this person?â
âNo.â
âWe went through your financial records and didnât come across anything like that.â
âI donât know, thatâs strange, but maybe the other driver never got back to John.â
That didnât seem realistic, unless the driver took what was owed in blood.

Brian Blade looked like heâd aged since our first meeting. The reality that his boss wasnât coming back had sunk in. I had ruled him out, as by all accounts they had an excellent relationship, and there wasnât a motive. Blade didnât have the degrees or license to operate the firm, and the client base was made up of contacts Talbot had developed over the years.
After shaking hands, he said, âI still canât believe we donât know what happened to John.â
âWeâre working on it.â I didnât want to tell him his boss had started the mystery by lying about which flight he took back to Fort Myers.
âThis goes on any longer, I donât know how weâll be able to keep this place going.â
It was another example that the actions of one person barreled into others. Iâm sure Blade had thought of things that could go wrong but never considered his employer vanishing.
âIâm sorry.â
âMe too. You can use that desk.â He pointed to a secretary desk piled with ledgers. âI pulled the month-end reports for the last year and the bank statements as well.â
âThanks.â
âIâll log you on.â
âThatâd be great. I know Mr. Talbot had at least one private bank account at Florida Integrity that listed this office as the address of record.
