Deadwood

It was quiet. Too quiet.

John had expected to see his home shrouded in darkness but he figured Scout would have found one of the flashlights he’d left on the kitchen counter. There was zero light coming from the windows at the front of the house and when he stepped inside, it was silent. Was she hiding? “Scout! Come out. It’s just a friend of mine.”

There was no reply.

Frank looked at him and then squinted into the distance as they both shone their lights into the darkened corners of the home. “You think she might have left?” Frank asked, shining his flashlight up the staircase while John wandered into the kitchen.

“I told her to stay here but she could have gone into the forest.”

“You really should have brought her down to the station, John.”

“That kid is scared of everyone,” John replied, checking the pantry. It had been the one area she had retreated to twice but she wasn’t there now. He double-timed it up the stairs to the second floor with Frank close behind him. As he was checking the bedroom, he noticed the French doors were wide open. Hurrying out to the balcony, he looked over the edge and his stomach dropped. “Oh shit.”

“What is it?” Frank asked, sidling up beside him. He took a look. “Is that…?”

“Clay. Yeah.”

They made their way down and out the back and John crouched beside him. He touched the side of his neck. It was cold. He was stiff. He’d been dead a while. One of his large kitchen knives was buried in Clay’s side and there was a pool of blood around him.

“She must of attacked him.”

John rose to his feet, shining the flashlight around the property. He glanced at Frank.

“You sure that’s what happened?” Frank asked.

“What other way would he have ended up here?”

“Sarah told me you had a confrontation with him.”

“And?”

“Well, are you sure you didn’t…” Frank trailed off.

John scoffed. “I might be suffering from traumatic brain syndrome, but I would remember if I had done that. Besides, Tammy had footage of Clay while he was still alive.”

“That was sent to her from his phone. He didn’t return home.”

John offered him a puzzled expression. “So, what? You’re suggesting I killed him? Why?”

Frank lifted an eyebrow; he didn’t need to explain, it was self-explanatory.

“Are you implying I did it to keep the girl?” John asked.

Frank put his hands up. “Listen, I’m not implying anything. I’m just trying to help Sarah, and you. These are serious accusations against you, John.”

He turned away, ignoring him, and shouted toward the surrounding forest. “SCOUT! SCOUT! If you can hear me. Come on out. It’s okay. No one is going to hurt you.”

“John.”

“Come on now!”

“JOHN!” Frank said loudly to get his attention.

He glanced at him.

“What?”

“When was the last time you saw a doctor?”

“Oh, screw you, Frank,” he said, turning around and marching back into the house. Frank was hot on his heels. “You’re not the chief anymore.”

“No, I’m not. My daughter is and I don’t want to see her in the position of arresting you.
