Silas could see his old adversary and Nichols sitting at the table. Saw the look on the young agents face as the old man told his stories. The bastard was winning the kid over as he always did. Silas felt at the file in his jacket. It would turn the tides, hopefully on a more permanent basis.
He descended the stairs, his eyes watching each tick of body language between the men below. The thick gel of his hair was cold against his scalp and itched, but he knew it hadnât dried yet.
Lingering at the hotel breakfast bar, Silas waited until Nichols was alone. âI think you should see this.â He laid the file on the table. âBefore Stephenson started encoding everything we took this from him in 1949.â
The title read: âMethods for Creating Mass Hysteriaâ
Nichols turned the pages scanning the proposal and techniques. âThis is what the CIA was looking for?â He glanced up. âYou had it the whole time?â
âItâs incomplete, and as you know, I want more than mass hysteria. I want control of human belief.â Silas placed his hand on Nichols' shoulder. âI thought you might doubt me that Stephenson was behind this. I wanted you to see that he has planned this before. He couldnât make it work back then, but maybe he was successful this time.â
Nichols took a deep breath and sat down, his eyes lingered on the document and pressed his lips together. âSometimes, I donât know what to believe.â
âI donât know if Stephenson did this, but we have to look at the evidence. Heâs our best suspect.â
âWe need more information.â Nichols pulled the folded papers from his pocket and slid them across the table. âI found these in Aliceâs room. Theyâre in the same style as the book Jones showed me.â
âThank you. Iâll take a look.â Silas picked up the stack and examined the writing. The kid was telling the truth. It looked Stephensonâs work.
A car horn honked. Nichols rose from his seat. âThatâs him. I need to get to work.â
Silas nodded and kept his eyes on the text. Jones had shown him a pile of ash and claimed it was the only thing in Stephensonâs room. Son of a bitch lied to me. The sentinel had picked his side, and it wasnât with Silas. Iâll need to take care of that soon.
He headed back up to his room to make the travel arrangements. He and Casey would head to New York while the rest of the team returned to the Bahamas. There was still a lot of work that could be done here, but he needed to get Alvero more money before Stephenson returned home.
