Sarah Olsen wasn’t a fool; she’d seen members of the Nomads and Vipers lurking near the department. Holding a steaming hot coffee in hand, she narrowed her gaze and observed them watching the comings and goings of officers. The past four days had been pure hell. Various law enforcement agencies that would usually provide support for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally had thinned out.

She’d run the numbers in her head. There were twenty-eight officers in Deadwood PD and fifty-three officers with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office but twenty of those were in corrections handling matters related to the jail. Since the power grid had gone down, there had been no change in officers leaving. The thought that this could last more than a week or two at most was unfathomable.

But she would have been a fool to think that they could hold on to law and order with so many motorcycle clubs in the area. Sure, for the most part, they were good people just looking to enjoy a rally, but not all of them were. The only reason they toed the line was out of fear of being tossed in jail. Every year the cops had the upper hand. A large number of agencies helped out and were only a phone call away if need be.

Now that had changed.

She couldn’t get anyone on the line.

And those she thought would stay were either gone or talking about jumping ship. At the end of the day, they were human, they had families. They weren’t meant to be here long term. Ten days at the most. Many of the outside law enforcement officers would be worried about family, and that was only exacerbated by the earthquakes.

A knock on her door startled her.

Lieutenant Gary Howell stuck his head in. “Chief. I got those numbers you wanted.”

She glanced over her shoulder. “What’s the tally?”

“Approximately a hundred and eighty. That’s taking into account us, the sheriff’s office, different local police departments, and the remaining agencies. Though I’m afraid many of the outside agencies have left now that the rally is canceled.”

She took a seat and put her coffee down. “Great.” Sarah rocked in her chair.

“Now, of course, a large number of them are over in Sturgis keeping watch at the camps and town, then we have the jail here, so really, we are sitting around fifty-six, give or take.”

“Fifty-six, that’s it?”

He nodded.

Sarah’s eyes widened.

“For the town. I mean,” Howell added. “Some are at home. The rest are working overtime.”

She shook her head, trying to grasp the gravity of the situation. They’d had a few run-ins; fights had broken out but no one so far had pulled a gun on any of her officers. She expected that to change soon. “There are far more bikers than that in town.”

“Yep,” he replied.

The problem was they weren’t just facing a situation with the Vipers and the Nomads as a threat. There were countless motorcycle clubs at the rally. Five hundred thousand bikers had descended upon the Black Hills, spread throughout the small towns in the area.
