Later that evening, Jonas stood in front of his bedroom mirror. He passed a finger down the scar on his face, which was still tender to the touch, then slid his hand under his boxer shorts. The rash under his pubic hair was just like the one on his hand, but itchier; like he wanted to keep rubbing it until his skin disappeared.

He laid back on his bed and swiped his cell-phone screen. An hour later, he was more confused than when he’d started and had narrowed the issue to either eczema (no history), smallpox (unlikely) and some variant of an STD (highly likely).

The results filtered up rapidly. Even though he was still covered by his parent’s health insurance, because he was eighteen, the doctor couldn’t say shit to his parents. It made him feel marginally better. He’d call Dr. Beaufort tomorrow, get a prescription to clear the whole thing up without his parents finding out. He drifted off to sleep some thirty minutes later, the sun now long passed under the horizon.
