CHAPTER 18
Jaeger lay in wait outside his bossâs office. The polished metal door slid open, and a young man in a black suit stepped out. Jaeger pounced on his partner.
He spoke under his breath, but his voice was urgent, âWhat did Lauden ask you?â
The man kept walking, pretending he had not heard him.
âPearson,â Jaeger persisted, âwhat did he say?â
His partner didnât slow his gait or even look in his direction. Jaeger had to almost run to catch up and lay a hand on his shoulder.
âPearson, what did you tell him?â he demanded.
âI told him you ought to be fired for your blatant disregard of agency protocol!â Pearson snarled. âWhat do you think I told him?â
âHow much does he know?â
âEnough. He wasnât impressed with your little search warrant fiasco. Apparently, he had to do quite a song and dance to convince the police that our agency had a need to know what was in her apartment, and then they turned up nothing.â
âOnly because her people beat the cops in there. Iâll bet theyâre all over the place⦠did I tell you I think I was followed on Friday night?â
âOh, yeah?â
âThis cab was tailing me, so I boarded a local tram to try and shake him. I watched the taxi turn the corner then once it was out of sight, I got off and ducked into an oxygen bar. Sure enough, the cab came around the block and followed that tram all the way up the street.â
âHas anybody ever told you youâre paranoid?â
âIâm telling you, somebody got into that apartment and snatched all the evidence,â Jaeger insisted. âBesides, we wouldnât have even needed a search warrant if you had done your job and nabbed the kid. He could have let us in without any hassle. But you couldnât manage to do that, could you?â
âWell, where were you? You were supposed to come and back me up as soon as you had the suspect in custody. What happened?â
âSomething came up,â Jaeger hedged. He wasnât about to admit that heâd been out dancing with Maxine. In order to enlist her cooperation, heâd promised to take her to Timothyâs, the most exclusive nightclub in the city and, of course, heâd had to make good on his part of the bargain.
âListen, Jaeger, Iâve had it up to here with you and the way you operate. Kidnapping is not a part of my job description.â
âOh, yes it is! Apprehending suspected extraterrestrials is what we get paid for, remember?â
âThis kid wasnât an alien, and you know it. He was born here in Umberton. You saw the birth certificate yourself. Heâs a citizen, for crying out loud!â
âYes, but I need him for leverage,â Jaeger admitted. He was finding the Livingstone woman far less easily intimidated than heâd expected.
âShe wonât talk?â Pearson asked.
Jaeger shook his head. âNot yet.â
âWell, itâd better be soon, because Lauden is running out of patienceâ¦and so am I.â
