CHAPTER 18

Jaeger lay in wait outside his boss’s office. The polished metal door slid open, and a young man in a black suit stepped out. Jaeger pounced on his partner.

He spoke under his breath, but his voice was urgent, “What did Lauden ask you?”

The man kept walking, pretending he had not heard him.

“Pearson,” Jaeger persisted, “what did he say?”

His partner didn’t slow his gait or even look in his direction. Jaeger had to almost run to catch up and lay a hand on his shoulder.

“Pearson, what did you tell him?” he demanded.

“I told him you ought to be fired for your blatant disregard of agency protocol!” Pearson snarled. “What do you think I told him?”

“How much does he know?”

“Enough. He wasn’t impressed with your little search warrant fiasco. Apparently, he had to do quite a song and dance to convince the police that our agency had a need to know what was in her apartment, and then they turned up nothing.”

“Only because her people beat the cops in there. I’ll bet they’re all over the place… did I tell you I think I was followed on Friday night?”

“Oh, yeah?”

“This cab was tailing me, so I boarded a local tram to try and shake him. I watched the taxi turn the corner then once it was out of sight, I got off and ducked into an oxygen bar. Sure enough, the cab came around the block and followed that tram all the way up the street.”

“Has anybody ever told you you’re paranoid?”

“I’m telling you, somebody got into that apartment and snatched all the evidence,” Jaeger insisted. “Besides, we wouldn’t have even needed a search warrant if you had done your job and nabbed the kid. He could have let us in without any hassle. But you couldn’t manage to do that, could you?”

“Well, where were you? You were supposed to come and back me up as soon as you had the suspect in custody. What happened?”

“Something came up,” Jaeger hedged. He wasn’t about to admit that he’d been out dancing with Maxine. In order to enlist her cooperation, he’d promised to take her to Timothy’s, the most exclusive nightclub in the city and, of course, he’d had to make good on his part of the bargain.

“Listen, Jaeger, I’ve had it up to here with you and the way you operate. Kidnapping is not a part of my job description.”

“Oh, yes it is! Apprehending suspected extraterrestrials is what we get paid for, remember?”

“This kid wasn’t an alien, and you know it. He was born here in Umberton. You saw the birth certificate yourself. He’s a citizen, for crying out loud!”

“Yes, but I need him for leverage,” Jaeger admitted. He was finding the Livingstone woman far less easily intimidated than he’d expected.

“She won’t talk?” Pearson asked.

Jaeger shook his head. “Not yet.”

“Well, it’d better be soon, because Lauden is running out of patience…and so am I.”
