Out of sight of Derby House, Tom’s faltering steps changed to a jaunty swagger. It was a warm, sunny day in mid-July and he quickened his pace, eager to get back to Weaver Street and the Weaver’s Arms. He was going to open up his betting shop again, and this time he was intent on making a killing.

Twice now, he’d managed to fool the examining doctors in Derby House that he was still traumatised. He’d shuffled in, mumbled his replies and made sure to keep the nervous tic in his right eye and cheek twitching. Feeling rather pleased with his performance, he caught the tram back to Edge Hill.

He went straight to the pub, called a pint then went into the back room. Tomorrow he’d be back in business. He stayed there for the rest of the afternoon.
