CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Wednesday afternoon

David pulled into the little diner in Davenport, Iowa. Thanks to the Chicago traffic, the trip took longer than expected, just under three hours. The farm’s website said they closed at five pm on Wednesdays. He glanced at his watch, he had two hours to fill before he could head to Dillon’s childhood home.

He settled into a booth at the back of the diner. He pulled out his phone and double checked how far he was from his destination. Less than thirty minutes. David smiled at the waitress when she brought his drink. “I’m not in a hurry. You can take your time putting in my order.”

The young brunette put her hand on her chest and sighed. “Thank you. We got slammed, my replacement is late, and the kitchen is in the middle of a shift change.”

“Put it in when things settle down.” He added sugar to his tea and looked at the news on his phone. He read the Lockharts were waving their trial for a plea deal. The evidence was just too damning. David thought that was the smartest thing old James had done. If a jury ever heard all the details, they would make an example out of the Lockharts. He relished the thought of the arrogant fuck spending his life in a damp, dark cell.

David pulled up the Google earth view of the farm. Making a note of the entrances in and out. A long drive set the main house apart from the rest of the farm. There was a big barn on the premises that the website said was used to let the visitors have a hands-on experience.

David’s stare hardened at the picture of the property. His shoulders hunched as he leaned into his phone. While he and his mother moved around more times than he could count, Dillon got to grow up in what amounted to a sanctuary. He shut his phone screen off and laid it face down when the waitress brought another drink and some freshly baked rolls. He spread butter on one roll and thought of his plans for later that evening. A slow grin pushed the corners of his mouth upward. Dillon had no idea how much her life was about to change.
