What’s new in HTML5?

HTML5 introduces some standard tags that you can use to mark up different parts of your web page instead of using <div> sections. hese new tags are <section>, used to mark up thematically linked content; <header>, which is used for introductory or navigational aids; <footer>, which is used to provide more information, such as copyright information; <aside>, which is used for loosely related information, such as a pullquote; <nav>, which is used for a significant group of navigation links; and <article>, which is used for an article. Each one is closed using a close tag, such as </nav> or </aside>.

These new tags can be used to make meaningful layouts, so that browsers and search engines can help users navigate your content easily. he tags raise some tricky questions, though. You can have an article inside a section or a section inside an article, for example. Choose your tags with care to ensure they make sense.

Versions of Internet Explorer that predate HTML5 don’t handle these well, so you need to add some code to make them compatible. See http://code.google.com/p/html5shiv.
