when one of them lacks something necessary, he does not go to a town or village, or to a brother, or friend or relation . . . to procure what he needs, for his will alone is sufficient. When he raises his hands to God in supplication . . . all these things are provided for him in a miraculous way.

So if we desire supernatural empowerment, the wisdom of the Celts points us to the spiritual practices that help us to see God more clearly, such as noticing the Divine Presence in ordinary life, spending time alone in contemplation, and the disciplines of green martyrdom, all of which are detailed in other chapters of this book.

Another obvious requirement for experiencing the supernatural world is prayer. Intercession is the river that carries Divine power in its current. Jesus used all sorts of metaphors to communicate the amazing power of intercession: prayer beats down the gates of hell, moves mountains, and (when practiced by Jesus) raises the dead to life. The poet Tennyson spoke true when he placed these words in the mouth of the dying King Arthur:
