It was getting dark by the time Olly arrived at the rally point, dishevelled and out of breath. Liz watched him through the window. The glass had been soaped, but she could just about see through it. âHe looks like heâs been run over.â
He almost was. But he managed to scrape a win, in the end.
âYou sound almost proud, Bagley.â
If I could feel such a thing, now would be a moment for it.
Liz sat back in her booth with a snort. Her own journey had been no easy thing. Sheâd ditched the drone in the park and made for the Chisenhale Gallery. There was a showing and crowd. Sheâd blended in, and left Albion looking lost. As far as she knew, they were still chasing her ride. Sheâd sent the drone towards Clapton with a false GPS ping attached.
She looked around. The café was a pop-up, nesting in the refurbished remnants of a Staroger coffee shop across from the park. All the bland company branding had been gutted and loose wiring, decorated with fairy lights, hung through the ceiling tiles. The floor had been stripped of lino, but someone had taken the time to put down carpet squares under the seating section.
It was cramped, the lavatories were out of order and the menu was miniscule, but it was safe enough and she like the placeâs counter-corporate vibe. Olly spotted her, and sidled towards the booth, looking around nervously. As he sat, she said, âHave fun?â
âNo,â he said flatly. âI never want to do that again.â
âIâve got some bad news for you, then. That was just another day at the office for us.â She paused. âDo you still have it?â
âSafe as houses,â he said. He patted his bag. âI thought at first Iâd broken it when I fell off the bus, but itâs still in one piece.â
âYou fell off a bus?â Liz asked, in some surprise.
âYeah, after the drone crashed.â
She shook her head. A waitress came by to take Ollyâs order. When sheâd gone, he said, âMaybe we should keep moving. Theyâll be looking for usâ¦â
âWhich is why we sit tight, until it gets dark. Then we take the underground and head back to the cellar.â She closed her eyes for a moment. âI wonder why they want it.â
âThatâs what we want to find out, right?â Olly pulled out the Optik and studied it. âIt doesnât look special.â He frowned at it for a moment, and then turned it on. âI can maybe brute-force a synchronization with my Optik, but thatâll require a hard rebootâ¦â
âWhich might erase whatever data weâre looking for,â Liz said. She reached out and put her hand over the device. âLeave it for now. Weâll clone it first before we do anything.â
Olly nodded and put the device away. âThat was too close for comfort back there. The way you went after them⦠I just froze.â He fell silent as their coffees arrived. âIâm sorry,â he said, after a moment. âDidnât even think to use the bloody stun gun.
