Chapter 13

The design for the hotel was basically a square pattern, so I took the first right when I hit the hall. I discovered right away that this floor was nearly identical to my own, so I gave the ice machine alcove a wide berth, just in case.

I couldn't shake the feeling that Samantha's death was not accidental, even with the evidence that she might have eaten bad sushi. Still, I only had my gut as evidence.

I didn't know enough about tetrodotoxin poisoning to know how quickly the symptoms came on. Even so, I couldn't help thinking that Samantha would have been feeling sick or something when she got to the display room. Was that why she'd been inside the pod? Had she started to feel bad after lunch, so she'd wanted to rest?

I cycled through the few things I did know. Remy Tarlington was angry about having her work stolen, as she'd put it. Gregory was upset because his prize new toy had been tampered with. Brian Langford thought she wanted to blackmail him. She was found dead in the meditation pod.

Before I could ponder more, I saw Robson standing outside a room at the end of the third hall. I shot off a quick text to Gilly before I reached him. He appeared to be examining something, and I was surprised to see him wearing gloves.

“What's wrong?” I asked.

He whipped around to face me, his hand going to his side as if ready to draw a weapon. When his gaze fell on me, his shoulders relaxed. “I told you that you can't be here.”

“Yet, here I am,” I said. “You look worried. Did something happen?” Maybe he saw the pistol.

“I haven't even been inside the room.”

I balled my fist onto my hip and stretched to peer around him. All I saw was the door. Nothing more. “What are you waiting for?”

Robson sighed then studied me for a moment as if trying to make up his mind about me. Finally, he said, “I guess it doesn't hurt to tell you.” He stepped out of the way and showed me a piece of tape stretching from the door to the wall.

“What am I looking at?”

“I taped this yesterday after the police arrived. I gave orders that no one was allowed in this room until the investigation was over.”

“But?”

“But…someone replaced the tape I put on here.”

I narrowed my gaze. “Is it a different brand or something?”

Robson shook his head, his hazel-gray eyes clouded with worry. “It's the hotel tape.”

“Then how do you know it's been tampered with?”

“I dog-ear my tape and make a date mark on the inside of the ear. It's a habit from my military days.”

I examined the tape. All four corners were flat. “Are you sure?”

Robson nodded. “I'm positive. But the person who removed and replaced it obviously didn't know. They replicated size and placement almost exactly. Whoever it was didn't want anyone knowing they were here.”

“We should go inside.”

He gave me a “yeah, right” stare. “We,” he gestured between us with a finger, “won't be going anywhere.
