Chapter Fourteen

Ash walked without thinking much about where he was going, which was probably stupid. He didn’t know the neighborhood well and—testament to exactly the goddamn point he’d been trying to make—it wasn’t like Vivienne had ever offered to show him around, or suggested they take a walk to City Park to go look at the lakes or tour the museum. Well… that wasn’t wholly true. They’d gone to a movie at the IMAX theater once, but it had been a late showing and they didn’t even get there until it was dark. Then they’d gone home, by way of her teasing him in the car, and she’d bent him over a dining chair and spanked him so hard it stung to sit down long enough to eat the pizza she’d made.

It was a good memory. Good enough that it made him mad at himself. What the hell was he doing, storming out like this? It was so stupidly melodramatic and dumb. He had a great thing going here. A wonderful, amazing domme who was incredible, and a dynamic that fit him perfectly… mostly. He was crazy to risk screwing it up. He was acting like this—like some stupid hormonal highschooler—instead of being a damn adult and talking to her. He could have kicked himself.

Except talking didn’t do much good, did it? He could see that by the pinched, closed-off look she’d get in her eyes. She either didn’t want to talk about it, or couldn’t handle it. Emotions weren’t exactly her strong point, after all. She was cagey as hell about her past, her background and her family, but Ash could tell enough to know it hadn’t been easy. People like Vivienne didn’t find life easy. She was wound too tight, too focused on perfection and too afraid of making mistakes. When she found something that worked, that felt safe, she stayed there in it, buckled herself in and refused to budge… and he could respect that, but he couldn’t understand it. Not entirely.

Ash huffed out a breath and watched it mist on the air. Maybe he was wrong about her. Maybe it wasn’t that she struggled with making something real, or intimate. Maybe she just didn’t want to, at least not with him. Maybe she was just too polite—or too happy with the sex—to say otherwise. Hell, he thought, angry at the wad of maybes balled up in his brain, who the hell wanted to catch those kind of feelings anyway?

A car coasted by, going slowly on the ice-crusted road, and Ash glanced up, still a little unsettled by the thought of meeting anyone… and by the thought he was out here in the first place. Though buried deep under his coat, and the T-shirt he’d thrown on, the ropes he’d slept in were still snug against his skin. As he moved, they brought back some of the warm, happy, secure feelings with which he’d woken up so blissfully.

Blissful, at least, in the split second before the anxiety had hit.
