The weather was lovely for late September, with a blissfully warm sun combining with a cool breeze coming down the river to create a perfect day. They spent the rest of the afternoon planting bulbs, her mom trying to add to the impressive burst of color her own mother’s tulips and jonquils had provided for many, many springs.

Molly had her shoes and socks off, her jeans rolled up to keep them clean. Her mom was turning sixty in a few months, but she was a very hardy sort, able to kneel in the garden for hours, working away with single-minded determination.

While Molly took direction and planted each bulb per her mother’s plan, she said, “I haven’t mentioned this earlier, but Dieter and I have been talking on the phone every once in a while.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful,” she said, sighing. “I was hoping he’d be able to remain friendly with you.”

“I’m glad too. He likes being back in Germany, even though he didn’t plan on returning.”

“I haven’t asked, but are you dating anyone?”

“No one,” she said. “I haven’t been ready to. But I’ll get around to it.”

“You’re going to have a hard time finding anyone better for you than Dieter.” Her mom poked at her with a foot. “Sometimes I think you assume men like him grow on trees.”

Molly sat back on her heels, looking up. “No, I don’t. But I wasn’t getting everything I needed in my marriage, Mom. I thought it was better to cut my losses and try again.”

“What are you looking for?” she asked, showing a little of the exasperation she’d expressed when Molly had informed her of the divorce. “He was an excellent provider, he gave you all of the freedom you could possibly want, he was crazy about you…”

“It just wasn’t working. I can’t explain it better than that.”

“I think your expectations are out of control. You’re trying to find a perfect man, but he doesn’t exist. You have to decide what the most important things are, and be happy if you get most of them.”

“Huh,” she said, looking up again. “Is that what you did?”

“I’d say that’s exactly what I did. And it worked out just fine.”

“What was on your list?”

“Well, it’s been a while,” she said, smirking, “but I think I remember.” She looked thoughtful for a moment, then said, “My main goal was to find someone who was going to be a success. That meant I needed a man with a lot of confidence.” She made a face. “There’s nothing worse than a man who’s always crying about his troubles. I wanted someone who could handle his own needs, since I wasn’t about to be a nursemaid to anyone.”

“If that was your entire list, you clearly got it,” Molly said.

“I did. Now we’re both still reasonably young, and your father’s set to bring in a very nice paycheck. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t work for another ten years. Maybe fifteen.”

“He’s found another job?”

“He has. He’s going to advise a very large construction company based in D.
