Chapter TWENTY-FIVE

The café was hopping as it always was this time of evening. Jeb, ever-present, was busy bussing tables as quickly as they emptied. The food was hot, fresh and homemade. For many of the men who came into Café 22 it was the only hot meal they would have all day and it was free.

Abby Beck was the pastry chef at the diner and she and her husband were having dinner with their son, Stephen. Stephen had been battling a life-threatening cancer when Doc Riley stepped in and saved the boy. Now his father was working at REAPER as head of maintenance and his mother worked at Café 22. A win-win for everyone.

Stephen leapt from his seat and ran toward Max and Riley, jumping in to the pretty woman’s arms.

“Doc! I’m signed up for baseball! Can you believe it? I get to play!” He was so excited Riley’s heart nearly burst for the boy. His genuine excitement at finally being able to do the things other little boys did was heartwarming.

“I’m so happy for you buddy, you’re going to do great!”

“I can teach CC how to play when he’s older,” said Stephen. He looked up at Max and grinned shyly. “If that’s okay with you Mister Max.”

“Buddy, it’s more than okay with me. CC will need lots of teachers as he gets older.” The little boy flashed a huge smile at him and then he stalked back to his parents’ table. Abby and Don gave them a wave and grateful smile.

“Wow, this place is really busy,” said Olivia.

“It is,” said Titus. “Sara has done an amazing job and the chefs are all former veterans. Plus, with the addition of Abby as pastry chef, we’re getting orders for private events constantly.”

“That’s just so cool,” she said admiringly. Titus pulled out a chair for Olivia and introduced her to the rest of the team. When her brother entered the room, she watched him carefully unsure if his earlier humble attitude would still be present. But when he shook hands with all the men of REAPER and his team pulled up chairs to join them, she breathed a heavy sigh of relief.

“So, we have a team coming from New Orleans to join us,” said Sly. “They should be here any time. Once they get settled, we’ll take time in the morning to make a plan to hit the labs. I have satellite imagery of the entire area and we’ve positively ID’d the locations.”

“Satellite imagery?” asked one of men on Rory’s team. “You guys have your own satellite?” Sly looked up at the man with a quirky grin and he nodded.

“You dudes are somethin’,” said the man at the far end of the table.

“Kal and Proctor are my two comms experts. They’re the best I know, so if you need any assistance, they’re available Sly.”

“Thanks man, we can always use extra help. We also have several phone numbers associated with Vincent’s goons. We’re going to be scrambling signals in the area, so they’re communications will be down.
