CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Neil McGovern sat in his office going through paperwork. As head of the Scottish branch of the government witness protection programme, he was starting to see his workload getting bigger. Nothing he couldn't handle, but he missed his days back in London sometimes, when he worked undercover.

Still, he was home every night, and his missus was happy about that.

There was a knock on his door, and he called for his secretary to come in.

'This report came for you, sir.'

'Thanks, Linda.' He took the paper from her as she retreated. Read through it, and picked up his phone.

'Frank? How's things?'

'Great, Neil. I'm just back at the station.'

'How about lunch?' He looked at his watch, almost midday.

'Where were you thinking?'

'I like your style. Ask where before committing. However, I do need your help with something. And I thought you wouldn't mind accommodating the father of your wife-to-be.'

'Sure. Why not?'

'The North Bridge Brasserie in the Scotsman Hotel. Say, fifteen minutes?'

'Won't you need to reserve a table there?'

McGovern laughed. 'They'll have a table for us, Frank.' He hung up, actually looking forward to seeing the man who was going to make an honest woman of his daughter. If he hadn't liked Miller, then there was no way he would be marrying Kim, copper or no copper.

He grabbed his jacket, and walked out into the anteroom. 'Have Brian bring the car round, Linda, please. And don't rush back from lunch. I'm having a meeting.'

'Right away, sir.'

McGovern walked along the corridor. These offices occupied two levels of a corner of the new Scottish parliament building down in Holyrood, directly across the road from the palace. His invite to the Queen's garden party had been greatly appreciated, especially by his wife, Norma Banks, the Procurator Fiscal.

The black Range Rover was waiting for him when he entered the underground car park. The luxury SUV whisked him up to the North Bridge, where Frank Miller was waiting for him outside the side entrance to the hotel.

'Frank, glad you could make it.'

'Well, if it was McDonald's, I'm afraid another appointment would have come up.'

They walked in and went through to the restaurant where a young woman took their coats.

They both ordered soft drinks when the waiter came over.

'Kim was round talking with her mother about the wedding,' McGovern said. 'She's excited, Frank. Even more so than when she was preparing to marry Eric.'

'You know I haven't asked her yet?'

'My Kim loves you, and in her mind, it's just a matter of time. She's very patient, but she wants to spend the rest of her life with you.'

'I do want her to be my wife, Neil. I just want the timing to be right. To be special. I'm excited. On the inside. I have my tough copper look on just now, but I promise you I'll be smiling for the photographer.'

McGovern was reading the menu then he put it down, apparently having settled on a dish. 'I need you to be honest with me now, Frank. I know you were
