The Devil’s Tool Is Fire

I was half-awake. That guy was tough, powerful even.

I could hear a truck coming toward me, so I dragged myself up. All I could do was try to limp away from the scene. A limousine appeared, and I was relieved to see Michael.

“What the hell happened? I gave you one simple task, yet you guys screwed it up!” Michael yelled angrily.

“We were ambushed. It was some kid dressed as a superhero. He could control electricity. It was strange. He called himself Voltage,” I panted.

Michael was outraged. He covered his face with his hands. “So, let me get this straight. This disaster is all because of some kid dressed as a damn superhero?” he said, trying to hold back his anger.

I sighed and looked down at the ground. “Uh…well, yes.”

The city was without power.

Wait, oh God. I began to realize something.

“Oh no,” I said.

“What? What are you talking about?” Michael asked.

“Get me to the hospital now!” I demanded.

Michael and I were driven to the hospital. The streets were dark. I could see people concerned with what was going on.

I raced inside the hospital and looked around. Doctors and nurses were running around, trying to get the power back on. I ran to Cindy’s room, but when I got there, it was empty.

A doctor then came behind me and said, “Oh, I’m sorry, sir, but you need to leave right now. The sudden power outage knocked out everything, and the backup generator was destroyed.”

I turned around and directly looked at him in the eyes. “Where is she?” I said.

The doctor was confused. “Who are you here to see?” he asked.

“Cindy Harris. Where the hell is my wife?” I screamed.

The man started to move away from me. “I’m sorry, but she wasn’t lucky. Her system needed to rely on the life support. When the power outage happened, she didn’t make it. I’m so sorry to tell you this, but she’s dead,” he said calmly.

I instantly lost all feeling in my body. It was as if I had just been stabbed right through the chest. I felt purely empty.

She was gone. She was the whole reason I’d even done all of this—getting this power and committing crimes that I regretted. She was all I truly needed in this life. She was all I’d ever had and wanted. My parents weren’t there for me, and now, I’d lost the person I love most in this world.

I began to walk out of the hospital, not saying a word.

Michael was waiting by his limousine with the door open. “You good?” he asked.

But I didn’t say a thing. I just got inside the limo.

He began to talk, “Okay, look, that was a mess-up, but we’ve always got next time. I have another truck ready to be delivered to a new buyer, and he’s—”

I cut him off from his task, “I’m done, done with this.”

He looked at me and replied, “What are you talking about? I need you, and you need me for the money.”

“Not anymore.
