CHAPTER 6

The Network

Abby, Clara, and Will were scooped up. The bugs moved them to a door. There was a panel of buttons. One of the bugs pushed a button. The door slid open.

“Abby,” Clara said. Her voice shook. “What’s in here?”

The bugs pushed the kids inside the room. There was a ceiling light. A gray table stood in the center of the room. Two gray chairs were next to it.

Then the lunch lady appeared. A few walking sticks stood behind her.

“All right,” Abby said. “What you’ve done here is very impressive. But what’s going on?”

The lunch lady stared at them. Then she smiled. “It all starts with a rash,” she said. “Those tiny red spots on your body. You don’t think twice about it.”

“I do!” Clara yelled. The rash covered her body. “I think about it a lot.”

“Then,” the lunch lady went on. “The virus inside you will spread. The rash will eventually connect. Your skin will harden. Then you’ll become one of us!”

The lunch lady held up her hand. One of her fingers turned into a few walking sticks. The bugs sat on her palm. Then the lunch lady shook her hand. The bugs became one with her finger again.

“And you’ll be able to do everything we can,” she said.

Abby glanced at Will and Clara. They all shared the same look. This was not happening!

“This town has the perfect weather,” the lunch lady said. She smiled widely. “It starts here. Then we will take over the world.”

The kids heard thousands of bugs laughing.

“We are building underground networks. The tunnels go across the planet. We have evolved. Our camouflage skills are perfect. We’ve been hiding among you. This plan is unstoppable!”

“Why are you doing this?” Abby asked. “What do you gain? Why can’t we all live together?”

“Because you are ruining the earth!” the lunch lady snapped. “Humans can’t save this planet. We can! That’s why we planted the virus.”

Abby looked at her friends. Now they knew.

“But how does it spread?” Clara asked.

“Oh, I know! Cafeteria food,” Will said. “You’ve been infecting us through our food.”

The lunch lady smiled.

Abby never ate the food at school. Except for when Will had shared his maple sticks! The next day her rash appeared.

It all made sense. Students and teachers ate the food. They “ate” the virus. Then they would get infected. Soon, they would become bugs.

“You kids made it easy.” The lunch lady laughed. “You want everything right now. Nobody has any patience. It’s meaningless. You get what you want. Nothing else matters. You’ll eat anything!”

Abby started to speak. But the lunch lady quickly left the room. The door slid shut behind her.

“All right,” Abby said. “That was creepy.”

“Now?” Clara yelled. “You’re saying that now? You didn’t say it when we got the rash. And what about the wild elevator ride? No more adventures, Abby!”

“Clara, calm down,” Abby said. “We’re not becoming bugs. Let’s get out of here. Expose this underground network. It will be shut down. Heck yeah, we’ll be heroes!”

“Hey,” Will said. He moved to the door.
