Chapter Four

1907, New York City

“I wish I had invitations like this from my job,” Viola said, as glanced outside the carriage window, marveling at how fast everything was speeding by.

“Well, unlike my sister, I actually like our customers at the butcher shop. And, occasionally, a great invitation comes our way. I am glad to share this invitation with you.” Nicolas smiled at her.

She smiled back.

“And your sister, wherever she is.” Viola said.

“It’s not my fault this carriage can only sit two people.”

“She was mortified that we would be alone.”

“Ermine is happiest when I’m miserable. And now, she’s miserable because I am happy.”

Viola giggled, not because she liked his sister, but because he described his sister’s bitterness perfectly.

She looked behind her, glad that his sister had not shown up yet.

“How does it feel having a silver screen star as one of your shop customers?” Viola asked, wondering about the person who gave the invitation to Nicolas.

“He is just a regular person, like you and me. He used to live around here and shopped at my family’s butcher shop all the time. Who knew he’d become a silver screen star?” Nicolas said with a broad smile. “I didn’t think he would remember me, now that he is a star in moving pictures.”

The Harvest Moon shone brightly, lighting up the buildings as the carriage’s wheels clattered along the cobblestone streets.

As their carriage traveled uptown, the streets became less populated and more spacious. The streets were cleaner, and the sidewalks were, too.

Viola sat back and smiled at Nicolas. “This is exciting. Thank you for inviting me.”
