Chapter Six

er comment caused a small bubble of Hlaughter, and now she saw through the perfunctory lust that she noticed before. Sahn was testing her to see if she was worthy of his friend. It was almost enough to make her regret hitting him.

Almost.

They returned to the sitting room in silence, each of them lost to their own thoughts.

A more substantial lunch had been prepared by one of the worker elves who left with a nod as they sat comfortably. Kevik took his position on the stool again.

“Have they all been sent here from Underhill?

Or were they here before the move?”

“There is a gate under the ice, in Kevik’s private quarters. They are here for some basic offences such as insulting an elf of higher rank, or one of the ruling houses.”

“Really? They can be sent here for insults?

Wow. They won’t like Silverwood then. They are Viola Grace

trying to abolish the castes there. The first few volunteers that came through worked together to start the town, and from that camaraderie has grown an attitude of equality.”

“Really? Even trolls?”

“Even trolls. They are doing a lot of the roadwork and home building. They are really good with bridges, too.”

His snort of laughter startled them both. He really wasn’t used to lightening up in the conversational arena. She had been completely serious, but he had taken the troll comment as a joke. The fact that he still had a sense of humour after all those centuries was heartening, it gave her hope for all her friends who were now wed to elves.

On impulse Holly reached out to take Kevik’s hand, his startled smiled warmed her more than she had imagined it would.

Kevik broke the silence that had fallen over their gathering. “Holly, would you like to see the ice caverns? They are quite lovely this time of year.”

Sahn laughed. “You are just trying to take her away to be alone. The ice caverns are always lovely.”

“Quiet, you.” She sent Sahn a harsh look and stood up when Kevik did, then she turned to her beau. “Yes, I would love to see the ice caverns.”
