Chapter Eleven

I pick up my pace as I run on the balls of my feet out of the courtyard, through the main halls, and into the forest. I see the back of Loki's head and run for him. He’s going to the lake. My steps slow as I watch Loki pick a rock off the ground and skim it across the surface of the water. I don’t think he’s caught on that I’m here yet, so I keep myself hidden in the shadows of the trees, watching him.

Water laps at his feet as he sets his shoes on the ground beside him. The setting sun bathes him in amber hues while he picks up a pebble and throws it across the water. After a few skips, the stone sinks into the water, leaving a ripple in its wake.

He grabs another and attempts to skip it. The pebble jumps once and stops. He picks up a third, then a fourth, and gains a little more distance with each one. When he turns my way, his expression is determined, his brows pulled together in contemplation.

I smile to myself. I've never seen this side to him. He almost looks a little vulnerable in a way. I step out of the trees and approach him.

"What are you doing here?" he asks, noticing me without lifting his head. He continues to skip pebbles across the lake, each one growing more momentum than the last.

"I could ask you the same thing," I say quietly, kicking my shoes off. My feet sink into the soft grass as I tiptoe over to him.

He pauses, then picks up another stone. "Do you know how to skip rocks?"

I take this as an invitation to stay and sit down on the grass with him, crossing my legs over each other. “No, actually.”

He tosses another pebble into the lake; this one skips at least four times. “That’s surprising.”

“Why is it surprising?”

“Isn’t your mother from the sea?”

I blink at him, surprised he knows this about me. He's clearly been doing a little research.

"She is," I say, picking up a flat stone and running my fingers over the smooth surface. "But why would that mean I know how to skip rocks?"

He shrugs, throwing another stone that skips five times. Now he's making me want to try it. “It wouldn’t," he says. "It would just mean you’re around water a lot as a kid. Kids get bored. Kids who get bored around water tend to do one of three things: swim in it, throw stuff in it, learn to skip rocks.” He skips another and it jumped five times before sinking.

I nod, impressed. “Maybe you could teach me then.”

He smiles and looks at me from the side of his eye. “It’s not something that can be taught in a few minutes.”

"I've got more than a few minutes," I tell him, shielding my gaze from the blinding sunray that captures his features. "Why are you out here, Loki?"

The muscles in his face clench hard. "I needed some time alone.
