The following morning, on her way into work, Lorne reflected how awkward her life had become in the last few years. She loved Tom, at least she thought she did, but there were times when she really hated him as well. She wondered how many couple’s relationships ended up that way.
She entered the car park, spotted Pete’s old car, or the Sherman Tank as she lovingly called it, and let out a relieved sigh. She was glad he was back and crossed her fingers, hoping he was sober, otherwise Sean Roberts would be after her blood at the end of the day.
“Morning, Bert. Lovely day. The sun is shining for a change. It’s enough to brighten one’s mood anyway, right?”
“If you say so, ma’am. Top of the morning to you.”
She breezed through the reception area and stared ahead of her as she climbed the concrete stairs up to the next level.
Pete was in the hallway, having just exited the men’s toilets.
“Morning. Sobered up, have you?”
“Of course… About yesterday…you were well within your rights to send me home, and I…umm…I apologise.”
“Apology accepted. You and I need to have a proper chat about that later, we’ll be too busy dealing with the new case this morning.”
“Can’t that be the end of it?”
“Nope, not this time. Your absence was remarked upon by DCI Roberts, and he’s told me to read you the riot act. If I don’t, Pete, it’s only going to reflect badly on me. Questioning my ability, or inability in your case, to reprimand my staff.”
“What utter bollocks. My behaviour has nothing to do with you. Anyway, it happened in my own time.”
Lorne shook her head and tutted. “If that was the case, I wouldn’t have sent you home, would I? You need to get a grip, man.”
“And you need to stop nagging me.” He stormed into the incident room ahead of her.
Shit! Just what I need, a mardy bloody partner to deal with as well as an angry husband.
She entered the incident room once the door had stopped swinging back and forth and glared at Pete. She was tempted to summon him to the office but dreaded how that would turn out in her current frame of mind. Instead, she asked her partner to buy her a coffee and sauntered into her office.
He showed up a few seconds later with two cups in his hand. “Want to fill me in on the new case over a coffee?”
Lorne smiled. She didn’t have it in her to remain angry at him for long. She removed her coat and sat behind her desk, giving the awaiting post nothing more than a cursory glance. That would have to wait, for now. Then she went over the details of the case so far.
Pete listened intently, nodding now and again, and once she’d finished, he announced, “It’s the daughter. So when are we going to arrest her?”
Lorne’s eyes rolled up to the ceiling. “It’s not as easy as that. We need to place her at the scene for a start.
