CHAPTER 20

I heard the emcee say my name, "And now I'd like to welcome Sasha to the stage. Sasha? Come on out." I walked out onto the stage to a smattering of applause and took my seat on the couch. I was on the stage by myself. I looked out into the audience but couldn't see much with the glare of the lights. It was hard to know where to look or what to do.

"Ladies and gentlemen, our leader, Vigil's visionary, Sterling Morgan." The emcee announced, and the crowd broke into applause that even included some excited hoots.

Sterling walked out, arms raised as if in victory, waved to the audience and came to greet me. I stood up, and he shook my hand. "Sasha, I'm so very glad you're here today. Please sit." I smiled and sat back on the edge of the couch, wary and watching.

"Friends, we are here today for a momentous occasion. The project that I've worked tirelessly behind the scenes on is ready to make its debut and today we are going to demonstrate that readiness." There was more applause. I just sat still and straight, wondering what was going to happen next.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press, of our government and of the tech community, we have brought you together this morning to show you the future. Please join me in watching this brief video."

The lights dimmed a bit in the auditorium and I turned to see the screen behind and above us. The video began with the Vigil logo and then talked about the uses of the ink technology and tracking. It was practically the same demonstration that he'd used at the gala. I felt myself relax a little. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Instead of showing the tracking footage from the gala, it showed me arriving at the theater from a few blocks away and parking and making my way into the venue. They sped some of it up when I was in the green room, and then it showed me seated on the stage, where I was now.

"As you can see, we were able to track Sasha here from our perimeter into the venue here this morning. Sasha, here, has our phase four ink on her face. But more than murder dots, we have the ability to do so much more. And this technology is ready for use in commerce, government, education and beyond." He said proudly.

I sat there with a polite smile on my face. How long was this demonstration going to last? I wanted to leave the spotlight but was stuck. That's when Sterling said, "But today we're going to show you an even better proof of concept. This is just the beginning."

He turned to me and said, "I'm so glad we have you on board, Sasha. Your help has been invaluable in preparing this demonstration."

I looked at him in confusion. I hadn't done anything, hadn't been told anything. What was he talking about?

"Yes, you were very helpful to us.
