While Holiday and Burne-Jones filled their windows with aesthetically beautiful figures, Charles Eamer Kempe created a distinctive style that was luxuriously detailed with a draughtsman-like quality. Kempe initially sought an ecclesiastical career, but fearing his stammer would blight this choice he turned instead to the decoration of churches, learning much about medieval art from time working with Morris and the architect George Frederick Bodley. He was influenced by Renaissance artists from sixteenth-century Germany and The Netherlands as well as by the late-fifteenth-century stained glass at St Mary’s Church, Fairford, Gloucestershire, which remarkably survived the destruction of the Reformation and Civil War and today still forms the most complete set of medieval windows in England. His style was characterised by intricate drawings often set upon clear and yellow stained glass, with limited sections of dark colours like olive green and ruby red. Some windows contain a single important figure richly adorned in bejewelled robes and patterned fabrics with softly shaded grey faces standing beneath an intricately designed medieval canopy. Other windows with traditional Christian themes have figures arranged in pairs and groups, with Kempe’s remarkable attention to detail in both the foreground and background, sometimes including a beautiful landscape viewed through a window. His studio produced a prodigious quantity of stained glass up until the 1930s, maintaining the fine detailing and ample use of clear and yellow stained glass.
