The Exterminating Angel
A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.
Jeremiah, Chapter 31, verse 15
Barrows and carts were emptied of their coal and used with door shutters and litters to transport the corpses from the pit brow to an outhouse at Throstle Hall Farm near the edge of the colliery. There they were each laid out on hay, and the dirt and mud covering their young faces was cleaned off by a group of volunteers led by G.H. Teasdale, a member of Clarkeâs staff. Cart then followed cart into Silkstone, each carrying the bodies of the townshipâs young hurriers and trappers back to their homes. It was as if an exterminating angel had visited Silkstone that day and scarcely left a single cottage in which there was not one dead.
A local correspondent from the Northern Star was one of several regional newspapermen who rushed to Silkstone to report the story of the storm, unaware of the tragedy that had taken place there. It is unlikely that any of the correspondents had reached the township by the time the bodies of the children were brought home, so the following is almost certainly based on anecdotal information given to the journalist:
It was a most heart rending sight to witness the carts with the bodies in them going through Silkstone, leaving one corpse or two at nearly every house, and the women in a state of distraction, tearing the hair from their heads.
