Chapter 21
I thanked the detectives and watched them drive away with Charlotte Burrell in the back of their car. While they were in the interview room, they’d informed her that they were going to let her loose where they found her and gave her a warning. I added a bit about her maybe choosing a new profession, which I was fairly certain she would ignore or dismiss. In any case, she thanked me for talking to the detectives.
After talking with the guys in Patrol and getting a BOLO on the vehicle, I’d walked back into the homicide bureau and into my office to go through the process of shutting down again—my computer was powered down, the lights turned off, the door locked. If it had been normal office hours, I would have been making phone calls to see what I could do about getting Grammer out of his holding cell. That late, however, nothing could be done until morning. He’d be spending the night in lockup, and while it was unfortunate, if he hadn’t picked up a prostitute in the first place, he could have avoided the entire situation.
I popped into Dave’s office on my way out, told him about Burrell and the truck, and brought him up to speed as fast as I could. He said he’d call me with any updates overnight. I let out a big breath as I used my foot to open the station’s back door to the parking lot. My Bronco sat by itself fifty yards away. I pulled out my phone as I walked, seeing another pair of text messages from Amy letting me know that a half hour had passed. I dialed her.
“You’re late,” she said and laughed.
“Sorry. You know how it is,” I said. “I’m just walking out, though. What’s up?”
“Nothing. Waiting on you.”
“Dinner and a movie?” I asked.
“Yeah, that’s fine. I just want to get out and do something,” she said.
Although I was beat and didn’t really want to do much more than lie on the couch and fall asleep, I felt as though I owed her something for making her wait on me to get off work.
“Whatever you want to do, babe.” I pulled the door handle for my truck and jumped inside. “I’m just leaving. Be home in a couple minutes.”
“Sounds good,” she said. “Love you, bye.”
“Love you, bye,” I said.
I clicked off from the call and jammed my phone into my pocket. I stuck the key into the truck’s ignition and turned it. I got a single click.
“Come on,” I said.
I tried again. Nothing. Not even a click.
“Don’t be a bitch, Lucille,” I said. I turned the key again to the sound of silence. “I just asked you to not be a bitch.”
I pulled the key from the ignition and reached across the truck for the glove box, where I grabbed my headlamp. I’d been stranded in the truck at night before and had all the necessary equipment to fix or at least assess the situation. I strapped on the light, clicked it on, and hopped out of my truck.
