Normally a sauna is a room that’s super hot because someone decided sitting still and sweating is a good way to relax. They are, of course, wrong. Sweating while playing and having fun is good. Sitting still can be good, too, while watching a movie or picking a lock or reading. But sitting still doing nothing and sweating is a combination that should never, ever happen.

Fortunately for the children, saunas aren’t safe for kids, so Quincy didn’t actually heat it up. Which meant they were all sitting in a wooden box of a room for thirty minutes, at which point even Quincy couldn’t pretend to be having fun.

“Let’s play hide-and-go-seek,” she declared, letting them all out of the heatless sauna. She grinned, twirling her rope. “And if I catch you, I catch you.”

“Rules?” Alexander asked, because he was not about to break any more of them.

“You have to stay inside,” Quincy said. “You can’t go in any guest rooms. Once you pick a spot, you have to stay there, so no sneaking around and moving spots once I’ve cleared an area.”

Theo knew exactly where she was going to go. This was the perfect opportunity to sneak into the grown-up spa area and spy.

“And what about the spa where the grown-ups are?” Alexander asked, raising an eyebrow at Theo because he knew what she was thinking and he was still mad at her.

“Absolutely off-limits!” Quincy said.

Theo stuck her tongue out at Alexander. He ignored her. She followed him as all the children scattered to find good hiding spots. Well, most of them scattered. Ren followed close behind them, creeping in what he thought was a stealthy way.

Theo stopped, turning to stare right at him. “Find your own spot,” she said.

“You find your own spot!” he retorted.

“I am.”

“So am I!”

“No, you’re following us.”

Ren glared. Then his face shifted, making him look sneaky. “Are you…looking for something?”

They weren’t supposed to tell anyone about the scavenger hunt. That was what Quincy had told them.

“Yeah,” Theo said. “A hiding spot. Duh.”

Ren stomped one foot, then ran off. “I’ll find it before you!”

“Ugh,” Theo said, grabbing Alexander’s arm to make him slow down. “Why did you make sure I couldn’t go to the spa? Don’t you want to know what’s going on here?” she demanded.

“Of course I do! But I don’t want to get in trouble doing it.”

“You didn’t mind getting in trouble at Fathoms of Fun! You broke out of their little jail room, and you tricked Edgaren’t and the fake Mrs. Widow, and—”

“They were bad,” Alexander said, scowling. “It’s not breaking rules if the people who make the rules aren’t supposed to be making them in the first place and can only make them because they’ve trapped the real person in charge in a tower. No one here is bad, Theo.”

Theo scowled. “I don’t like the Count.”

“Yeah, but not liking someone doesn’t make them bad. You don’t like Ren, either, and he’s not bad. He’s just annoying.”

“So annoying,” Theo grumbled. “But what if the
