I clenched my fists around the steering wheel until the steel under the wrapped leather howled from the force. “Goddamn sonovabitch!”

Tires screeched as I yanked the wheel and lifted my gaze to the rear-view mirror, finding Ruth standing there in the open, bathed in the hotel lights. She was beautiful. Too beautiful. My foot went to the brake as though my body obeyed only one…and it wasn’t blood ties and loyalty that held me here. It was because I loved her.

I. Loved. Her.

I forced my gaze from the haunting sight of her and lifted my foot from the brake pedal, finding the accelerator once more. It was because of love I had to leave. Here in this fucking city there was nothing but reminders of the kind of man I’d once been and that traitorous bastard wanted to make me remember what I’d done…what I'd demanded from the Gods. What I did to become the beast I was in the wake of the murders. The kind I never wanted to be again.

Still the past stalked me. I jerked my gaze to the rear-view mirror once more and jerked the wheel. A whisper of fear coursed through me. It was this place. This city. The city of the dead…my dead. I glanced to the dark, murky shadows. To the mountain that rose in the distance. The mountain I hadn’t set foot on in a very long time.

When I walked away from that mountain, I swore revenge.

When I walked away, I cared about one thing and one thing alone…retribution. As though this was an ambush, that hulking, dark giant loomed in front of me, urging me back there, to the past where nothing but regret waited for me. I knew what I'd demanded from the dark Gods that night…but how was I to know someone was listening? How was I to know that after a lifetime of loneliness and heartache that they’d grant me the one thing I demanded?

How was I to know they’d give me Ruth?

I didn’t…

But that didn’t stop the Gods from playing their sick, twisted games. I lifted my gaze from the road as the mountain grew closer and closer. “Goddamn you, Lilith,” I whispered, and that tendril of fear seemed to snake around my heart and grow thorns.

Everything I’d done that night and all the nights after came with a price. I didn’t realize that until now. A price I was once ready to pay, but not now…not when the end result stood in front of, me perfect and mortal.

“No,” I whispered. “No…”

But that dark power swelled inside me, forcing me to push against the accelerator and as though on instinct I guided the four wheel drive as it climbed. Halfway along my foot eased from the accelerator, letting the vehicle coast as I searched the edges of the road.

The track was heavily overgrown. Trees grew in the path, leaving me no choice but to pull over to the shoulder and switch off the car. I’d have to
