“Princess,” Rule called, lifting a hand to me as he stepped forward. “Let’s leave the Alphas to chat.”

Elithien stepped nearer the towering shadowed creature. Dark eyes seized mine before Russell lowered his gaze to the Vampire.

This was the second time Rule had pulled me away when the men around me wanted to ‘chat’. The last time, the warehouse had trembled and shuddered and what sounded like a bomb exploded inside before Russell stalked out with blood on his cheek. It didn’t take a genius to see what was going on here. I’d been in the center of pissing contests all my damned life. Why should this be any different?

Only it was different. I knew that the instant I met Elithien’s stony gaze.

These weren’t men…these were monsters.

There were rules to follow…especially where I was concerned.

I couldn’t hear what they were saying. White fangs flashed in the dark and that savage, unending snarl slipped from the Unseelie beast’s lips. But Elithien commanded his attention with that low, unyielding tone.

“Come over here,” Rule murmured. “And let me tell you how it feels to be thrown from a fifty-story building for love.”

“Sixty,” I corrected, tearing my gaze from Elithien as he stepped closer to Russell’s Unseelie beast. “It’s sixty floors.”

“Well, then,” he gave me a cocky smile, then winced. “That’s why it hurt like a bitch at the bottom.”

A sudden bark of laughter tore from me. The way he limped and grinned made it funnier.

“Ow,” he moaned, and lifted his good arm for me. “That hurts. Come over here and let me whisper all the nasty things I’m going to do to you when I’m better.”

He was such an idiot. I couldn’t help but smile and limp into his arms. “And when do you think that’s going to be?” I joked.

He leaned closer, lips kissing along my jaw as he whispered, “In about three point two seconds.”

A chuckle spilled from me… then died away as I caught sight of the shadow on the floor, long, curled…unmoving. “Hold that thought,” I muttered. It didn’t take long for that savage side of me to push to the surface.

Didn’t take long at all.

I barely limped. Hate was all I needed. I stepped out of Rule's arms and took three steps before I stopped, balanced on my aching ankle, and wrenched my foot backwards before I unleashed as hard as I could.

A sickening thud rang out as I drove my boot into Alex’s body. I did it once more for good measure, taking a soul-deep satisfaction in the hollow thump my boot made as it connected. “Come back from that, you piece of fucking shit.” Hard breaths claimed me as I stared at the body, then lifted my gaze to Rule.

Pride shone in the steel shimmer of his eyes.

I still remembered the feel of the gun kicking in my hand, still see the flinches in the crazy Vampire’s face as the bullets found their mark. I still saw Russell as he snapped Alex’s neck and let his body fall.
