EIGHTEEN

“Y

our robots aren’t armed, right?” I asked Vopkid.

He gave me a condescending look, like he thought I was stupid or something. “No, obviously. Why would the robots have weapons?”

One of the guards ran to Zomzin and gave him a PDD. He looked at the screen and all blood disappeared from his face. “They have just broken into some of our armories.”

“You were saying?” I told Vopkid.

I probably should’ve been scared, or at least worried, but other than the familiar rush of adrenalin, I didn’t feel much. Well, I was a bit surprised by how quickly everything had happened, but after everything that I’d been through recently, being under attack by a few million armed robots didn’t sound like a big deal. Vopkid looked like he was about to have a heart attack, but for me, it was Tuesday.

“Can they use your weapons?” asked Pat.

“Mother made them. Of course they can.”

“Cordi,” said Kurt into his PDD. “Bring the shuttle to us.”

“On its way,” she replied.

Several robots appeared from an entrance on the other side of the hall. They were mowed down by Kurt, Xornaa, and Maada. The sound of gunfire and explosions from outside increased at a frantic pace.

“Jim!” Tarq yelled frantically. “That monster dreadnaught is getting off the ground!”

Can we get scared now? asked a part of my brain.

Be scared. Be very scared.

“What are you waiting for?” I yelled back at Tarq. “Shoot at it.”

“I am still … oh, wait.” He disappeared from the screen.

“It will not work,” declared Vopkid.

I turned to look at him. “What will not work?”

“Shooting at Majestic. She is protected by an impenetrable shield.”

Great. This day keeps getting better and better.

I wondered which was scarier: an omnipotent AI, a monster superdreadnought with an impenetrable shield, or the million drones it carried in its belly. Or all three of them together.

“You guys still use Tommy Guns. How did you build such a shield?” I asked.

Vopkid shook his head. “I have no clue. It was Mother’s masterpiece.”

“If you do not mind, Your Highness,” I said, “I prefer to give it a shot.”

He shrugged. “You are wasting your time. Nothing can penetrate her shield. We have tested it already.”

I heard the shuttle engines approaching. “Let’s go.”

We ran out. The Marines and several Unzoid soldiers had gathered around the hall gate, shooting at the robots converging upon us from every direction. No one was shooting back—yet.

“How are things in here?” Kurt asked Edward.

The sergeant shot his gun three times in quick succession. “We might not have brought enough ammunition for this.”

He kept shooting his assault rifle in short bursts. A laser bolt passed by his head and hit an Unzoid guard in the face. Half the man’s face disappeared. He fell to the ground and twitched a few times.

“And that’s what I was afraid of,” added Edward calmly, like he was talking about the weather.

A few Marines brought out the boxes from inside the shuttle and started distributing weapons while two others escorted Pat and Benedita into the ship. Kurt holstered his machine pistols and, with a twinkle in his eyes, picked up an M-28 sniper rifle.
