It turned out Sara didn’t have time to tell Stick anything that night.

The boys, now scrubbed and bathed in their warm pajamas, dashed to meet them the moment they walked into the farmhouse.

And between eating the hot supper of tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches Velvet had fixed for them and Ivan reassuring the boys that the bad lady was gone, for good this time, there was no time for private conversations.

Even bedtime meant slipping into their king-sized bed with the twins snuggled between them—in case of bad dreams, Ivan pronounced, and Sara nodded her swift agreement.

He was right, and not just for the boys’ sake.

She might be the one having bad dreams, and if so, she wanted her boys right there where she could touch them, reassure herself they were all well, all safe. And where Ivan could reassure them all that he was there too. Because the bogeyman would never dare threaten with him on the premises.

But, as it turned out, she and the boys fell asleep almost the moment they climbed into bed. And if any of them dreamed bad dreams, they didn’t remember.
