This study was done in 2010 by Barbara Frederickson and Bethany Kok of Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive. Their team found that people with higher vagal tone have lower levels of inflammation and better overall cardiac health. More interestingly, they found that people with higher vagal tone tend to possess better emotion regulation and stronger social bonds. For instance, they discovered that when there is a genuine and wholehearted moment of social connected between two people, the parasympathetic âtend-and-befriendâ response is instantaneously triggered, and this improved vagal tone for the two individuals involved. The positive and psychological feedback of the warm exchanges between the parties led them to expand their social networks in a manner that spread positive emotions and positive social behaviors.
