MONTY ARRIVED IN UVALDE AT ELEVEN o’clock and parked beside Sheriff Boswell’s patrol car. He suspected the DEA agent would be there as well as the FBI. His friend Boswell would at least be a friendly face.

A deputy ushered Monty into Boswell’s office. Seated there were the sheriff and a man Monty had never seen before. A third man stood next to the only window, looking out at the street. Sheriff Boswell motioned to the man at the window and said, “Monty Kilpatrick, Drew Lloyd, FBI.” Turning to the seated man, he said, “This is John Pepper, DEA.”

Monty said, “Good to meet you.” After shaking hands with Pepper, he asked, “Where’s Freeman?”

“We think he’s skipped the country. Seems he’s been siphoning a few thousand bucks off his busts. Our best guess is that he’s got about five million in a Cayman Island account. We didn’t tumble onto him for a long time because he was smarter than that Ames fellow. He lived frugally on his DEA salary and evidently planned an early retirement.”

Monty smiled and, glancing at Boswell, said, “Just what we were talking about the other day.”

Monty realized the FBI man was sizing him up, trying to get a fix on him. But there were no hidden agendas with Monty Kilpatrick. Stay on your toes, Monty, he told himself. These guys are always looking for scapegoats.

Lloyd’s first impression of the game warden was off base. He mistakenly took Monty for a country hick out of his element in the big league of law enforcement.

“Do you get involved much in drug work? Isn’t that a little out of your line?” Lloyd asked.

“Certainly wasn’t my intention,” Monty said. “I was just acting on a hunch. I’ve done some undercover work from time to time for the DEA, and sometimes I make a bust on my own. But I’d rather deal with poachers any day.”

Lloyd was a veteran agent posted in the San Antonio regional office and an honest cop. His greatest flaw was his sense of elitism. He was a physical fitness nut, and his physique belied the fact that he was fifty-five years old. He looked ten years younger and carried himself with pride. His disdain for locals, as he called policemen, sheriffs, and such, was legendary. Tim Boswell had felt the sting of his ridicule on more than one occasion.

The FBI agent picked up a folder and flipped through a few pages. Glancing at Monty, he said, “It seems these guys knew exactly where to go in the hospital to find their man. They couldn’t have been on the ground more than ten minutes. Any thoughts about that?”

Monty shrugged and said, “My guess would be that they had someone on the inside. An orderly, a janitor, possibly a nurse.”

“How could they do that?”

“I’m positive there were two cars traveling together when I stopped the Mexican on Highway 90. My suspicion would be that after dropping off his shipment, the second driver doubled back to check on his friend. It’d
