The moment I entered; his gaze narrowed on me.
âWe meet again,â I mocked.
âWhat are you doing here? Did you follow me?â
To which, Sonja interjected. âI had a feeling you meant Faye when you told me whatâd happened.â Her glance turned into a glare for me. âDid you seriously let loose your fire in public?â
The woman whoâd told me to tell no one, spoke about it in front of the stranger, which meant I could be honest. âBarely public. And for a good cause.â I pointed. âI was helping him.â
Being a true man, he snorted. âAs if I needed any aid.â
âIt was two against one,â I reminded.
âBah, I could have handled more,â he scoffed.
Sonja shook her head. âBoth of you should have known better than to engage.â
âI had no choice. Those two thugs grabbed me first.â
âShe speaks the truth about that,â he grudgingly admitted. âThe Saurian appeared intent on abducting.â
âAnd, of course, you had to get involved.â Sonja rolled her eyes. âYouâre just like your father, Anakin.â
I snickered and was tempted to parody Star Wars. Who was your father?
âWhat so funny?â he grumbled.
âYour name. Anakin. As in Darth Vader before he went to the dark side?â I hummed the Imperial March.
âArenât you hilarious? Do you really think Iâve never heard that before?â he riposted.
He called out my lame joke. It appeared I was off my sarcasm game. Blame being thrown for a loop.
âWhy is he here?â I suddenly asked.
âNone of your business, little witch.â
âIf you say so, little dick,â I purred with utter sweetness.
The corner of his mouth lifted. âIs that supposed to be more comedy?â
âAre you always this conceited?â
âAre you always this annoying?â
âChildren,â Sonja interjected.
Anakinâs jaw tensed. âYou forget yourself.â
âAnd so do you. Let us begin anew as if youâve just met. Anakin, this is my apprentice, Faye. Faye, meet Anakin, a good friend of mine.â
Was that code speak for ex-lover?
âHey.â I offered him a cool hello.
He ignored me to say, âYou canât be serious. Sheâs a little old to be an apprentice.â
âAnd yet, this is what the Fates have given me.â
âShe lacks basic control,â he grumbled.
âSheâs practicing.â
He raked a hand through his hair. âDo we really have time for that?â
âWe donât have a choice.â
Cryptic conversations irritated me. âAre we done talking about me yet?â
âNo.â Him.
âYes.â Sonja.
Their opposing replies had me smirking. âWell, now that weâve settled that, licorice anyone?â
