CHAPTER 10

Amy was no closer to working out an answer to any of her questions when she woke in the luxury of Peter’s pleasantly impersonal guest room at ten o’clock the following morning. She wasn’t sure how she’d managed it, but she’d slept well despite not having taken any painkillers and the pain in her chest had eased, exactly as the hospital had promised her that it would. Birds were singing in the garden and the tiniest hint of sunshine that filtered through the lined curtains suggested that it was going to be a beautiful day even by the standards of her favourite season of the year.

Better still, the smell of freshly ground coffee laced with a faint hint of frying bacon that boded well for the sort of full English breakfast that she loved, but couldn’t be bothered to cook just for herself was drifting enticingly up the stairs. If it hadn’t been for the small matter of a murder and an attempt to at best commit grievous bodily harm and quite possibly another murder with herself as the intended victim, all would have been well with her world.

She stretched cautiously to check her muscles before she did anything as drastic as getting up and enjoyed the rare comfort of crisp, well-ironed pure cotton sheets against her sore skin because Peter wasn’t into duvets. Instead, he used beautiful, old fashioned ribbon bound blue wool blankets whose heavyweight had lulled her into a childlike sleep as she lay cocooned beneath an old-fashioned eiderdown. What, she wondered, would Mike have on his bed? And where was his bed, and how could she have been stupid enough to contemplate having a relationship with someone when all she knew about him was his mobile phone number? If Laura ever found out about the risks that she’d been contemplating taking then she’d never want to let her out on her own again and for once she’d have a point.

But the police could trace him if they wanted to and they almost certainly already had because they’d assured her last night that they had what they’d called ‘the matter of Mike Connor’ under control. Unfortunately, that didn’t mean as much as she’d have liked it to have done because she’d seen their idea of ‘under control’ before and it hadn’t impressed her then any more than it did now. The last time they’d said that the body count had kept rising, and she didn’t think they’d have stopped it going higher still if it hadn’t been for her innate curiosity.

She was getting that same feeling now so it seemed only sensible to spend these last few precious minutes before she had to get up reviewing what they wanted her to do next and deciding what she wanted to do. On the surface, it was easy enough because they wanted her to act as if nothing untoward had happened, which meant going to tea with Rebecca and waiting to see if Mike rang back because there was no way in hell that she intended to make the first move with him.
