CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Dinner with Luca was incredible.

It wasn’t just the delicious food but the company as well. I’d been worried that once we removed the bedroom or busyness of the chocolaterie that there wouldn’t be anything between Luca and me, but I’d had nothing to worry about.

Luca’s dry humour and clever observations shone brighter with nothing to distract me from them, but what struck me the most was his kindness. It was sort of hidden behind his words, but I hadn’t missed the way he’d gently steered me back to talking about how I’d set Tee and George up when I’d wobbled towards espousing about my loneliness. He’d squeezed my hand too like he was acknowledging my worries.

Everyone always seemed to think I wasn’t particularly observant, which I tended to use to my advantage. People showed you a lot more about themselves when they thought you weren’t looking.

And what I saw of Luca was a brilliant, self-deprecating, gorgeous man who worked too hard, cared too much, and couldn’t stop himself from putting those around him above himself, even at the expense of his own happiness.

Like the fact that he didn’t want Anya to have to work any more than she already did, even though it meant locking himself in the chocolaterie kitchen for more hours than there were in the day. And the fact that he wasn’t mad at his cousin for fucking him over because, despite the cursing, it was easy to tell he was just pleased Tony was mostly in one piece.

Or maybe it was more resignation.

If that were the case, I would be having words with Tony if I ever saw him. Luca deserved better than that.

I really wished there was a way for me to just snap my fingers and make everything better. But all I could do was listen and help out and decide what the fuck I wanted to do when this week was up.

Because I didn’t want to go back to London. I just didn’t know if Luca wanted me to stay.

Now really would be the best time to have an adult conversation about the whole thing, but I didn’t know how or where to start. I didn’t want to put pressure on Luca, and I didn’t want to make this into something more if it wasn’t.

Mostly, I was afraid if I said something, there was a good chance I’d go back to London with a broken heart.

But if I didn’t, that was going to happen anyway.

Decisions, decisions, all of them wrong I thought to myself as I watched Luca poring over the dessert menu Clementine had brought us.

“You look very serious,” Luca said as he glanced up.

“Sorry,” I said. “Just thinking.” I looked down at the menu. “Marron is chestnut, right? Like a sweet chestnut?”

“Yeah. You thinking about the Mont Blanc?”

“I am because it sounds delicious. What about you?”

“Probably tiramisu,” Luca said, frowning as he looked at the options again. “Or maybe tarte tatin. The Italian in me is craving tiramisu, but I doubt it’ll be better than my dad’s, and then I’ll just be sad.
