Proceeded to SHARTA and proceeded to SINEID 7 miles N OF GAZA. And it was at this time Lieut Kelly ISC was killed by a bursting shell. Midday sunlight fused to the cherry leaves threw a stained glass on the ground. Then âCâ boy platoon proceeded for guard duties over captured war material at HUJ and SIMSIN and NEJED and TUMRAH.
The battalion halted the following night at SUFAIR-ES-SHARKIYEH. A pillar of fire some saw when the stars went out.

Their bombardment of the enemy works grew daily in intensity until it reached a climax on the 2nd Nov when UMBRELLA HILL and the enemy line between that place and the sea at SHEIKH HASSAN was successfully assaulted and held. Heavy fire was heard in the direction of BEER SHEBA and large clouds of dust seen rising behind ATAWINWEH along GAZA-SHERIA ROAD which resembled the pillar of fire some saw and others doubted.
On the nights of the 4th and 5th and 6th the enemy under cover of hurricane bombardments made several demonstrations against the SHEIKH ABBAS sector immediately to the left but were driven back on each occasion. On the evening of 5th Nov 1917 large bodies of their troops were seen debouching from the hills surrounding SHELLAL and moving towards HEREIRA. Iliadic swag. Throughout the 6th a heavy cannonade was heard from the direction of HEREIRA and the bursting of shells on the ridges behind ATAWINEH REDOUBT. They withdrew through the barrage of fire along WADI SIHAN to WELL FARM. By nightfall it was reported that both HEREIRA and TEL-EL-SHERIA was in their hands and that GAZA itself was being evacuated by hostile troops.
Then the regiment formed to proceed into JERUSALEM to guard the HOLY PLACES as soon as they felt the slight tremors of Godâs feet on land.
