Selma: Congrats, that’s great! When do you start?

Me: Just finished filling out the paperwork. As soon as Mitchell gets off the phone, he’ll teach me the software. Can I swing by after I get off to take you to dinner to celebrate?

Selma: I have a better idea. Why don’t I make us dinner here? Selja is upset that she hasn’t gotten the chance to grill you yet, and she won’t lay off until she does. We might as well get it out of the way.

She wanted to cook for me.

When you grow up poor, food takes on a whole new meaning. Meals around our house were always inexpensive, but Mom did her damnedest to turn cheap cuts of meat and generic ingredients into some of the best meals I’d ever tasted. The woman was a goddamn magician. Many mornings, I woke up early to find her up putting together a roast before work, knowing it would have to slow cook all day in order to be tender and flavorful. For her, cooking was an act of service and an expression of affection. I wondered if Selma saw it the same way. Either way, my heart swelled at her offer.

Me: That would be amazing. Thank you. I’ll see you after work.
