No one is sure where turtles go after they “leave home” or how they find their way back. However, one study seemed to indicate that turtles use a simple navigation system involving the earth’s magnetic field. This allows the turtles to return to the same egg-laying site. The navigation system acts like a compass, pointing the turtles “home.”7

The heat of the sand incubates the eggs, and they are able to develop on their own. About two months later, the little hatchlings pop out from the nest and scurry to the water, swimming to reach open ocean currents where they will find food and shelter from land-based predators. Hatchlings face many dangers, and as few as one in one thousand eggs survives to adulthood.8
