“So?” said Alastair. “That was in, like, 1800.”

“It was 1803, Miss Smarty-Pants. But here’s the important thing. If you look real close, you can see it.”

I studied the map. “See what? Arkansas?”

“No!” exclaimed Dick. “You can see poop! Bird poop! My poop! Right there on the Louisiana Purchase.”

“Ew,” said Alastair.

Dick ruffled his feathers proudly. “I made my mark on history. I did, I did, I did. Tweep! President Jefferson let me fly around the Oval Office, at complete liberty. I made my mark on James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Aaron Burr. Okay, I’ll admit it, that last time I was aiming. I made my mark all over history. If a bird can do it, so can you!”

Alastair said, “Thanks for the advice, but, in our time, a president can’t exactly have a bird flying around the Oval Office.”

“Even having a Chihuahua is a stretch,” I added.

“Well, say what you want,” said Dick, “but in my day we appreciated opportunity. We did our duty. So should you.”

The jalopy shuddered back to life. Dick, surprised by the sudden noise, fluttered into the air.

“Bwauk! This thing isn’t safe!”

Alastair shook her head. “You can say that again.”

“Bwauk! This thing isn’t safe!”

Hastily rolling up his map, Dick took off toward the trees. As he disappeared among the branches, he called back to us, “Don’t run away from opportunity. And stay close to your friends. Tweep!”

I watched him go, then inspected the door where he’d been sitting.

“Well, he was right about one thing,” I said.

“What’s that?” asked Alastair.

“He left his mark on history.”
