Chapter 25

“This is bullshit!” yelled the scrawny man in the dingy wife-beater.

The front of his grungy tank top was now decorated with bursts of vivid red droplets. The black cargo shorts were still the same, hanging low and revealing the same dirty boxers as the day before, and probably several days before that.

“I want me a lawyer. This is police brutality!”

“Shut up, bitch,” Richardson growled, as he shoved the handcuffed man through the police station hallway. “I already said you have the right to remain silent, but you’re too stupid to use it. Shut your face, or I’ll shut it for you.”

The grimacing detective continued to push him to the front desk. With one quick movement, he crunched the rail thin man over and slammed his chest onto the oak. A muscular forearm was pressed across his bony back, pinning him to the desk.

“Well, good morning there, Rhody,” said the desk sergeant. “And a happy hump day to you. What little bit of sunshine did you bring us this morning?”

“This is the douche-bag who set us up yesterday.” Richardson reached into his sport coat pocket with his free hand.

“That’s bullshit! He’s lyin’. I didn’t set up nobody.” The man squirmed against the desk.

“Yeah, that’s probably accurate, considering you used a double negative, you illiterate piece of shit.” Richardson winked to the sergeant.

“Kiss my ass, motherfu—”

Richardson went up on his toes and drove more weight down onto the center of the man’s back. With a grunt, the pinned man continued to breathlessly give his opinion of the situation. Most of these opinions revolved around the premise that this situation involved various forms of bovine excrement, and how Detective Richardson had an unusually close relationship with his maternal parent.

“Here, Tony.” Richardson pulled a cell phone from his coat pocket. “Have a judge sign off on searching this. I’m sure we’ll find a text message to the dickheads who attacked us. It’s password protected, and I don’t believe Mr. Sunshine here is going to give us access. Once you get a warrant, get it to the boys in IT. Won’t take them long to get into it.”

“Sure thing, Rhod. What do you want to do with Mr. Happy in the meantime?”

“Toss his ass in a cell. For starters, charge him with assault, conspiracy, and resisting arrest. You can also charge him with being an asshole in the first degree, and felony stupidity.”

Two officers escorted the swearing man down the hall.

“Hey, Rhody. What do we have going on here?” Lieutenant Finch walked up.

“Good morning, Bill. I thought I’d take a little side trip on the way in this morning. Got lucky and noticed the guy who sent the text to set up Jon and me. I was kinda surprised. Didn’t think scumbags got up before noon.”

“Was he the one who popped the pink spot under your eye?”

“Yeah. Can you believe that shit? After I chased him a while, we had us a little discussion. I told him I wanted to bring him in to talk, but he said he wasn’t inclined to do so.
