Chapter Twelve
Jake was mowing the front yard when I got home.
I unloaded the groceries Iâd picked up on the way back from Starbucks. He turned off the mower and gave me a quick kiss. âNeed some help?â
âNope, thanks. Iâve got it. Is Em still home?â
âYup. Still in her room last I saw.â
âDid she eat anything for breakfast or lunch for that matter?â
âI made her eat a yogurt at eleven oâclock but thatâs it as far as I know.â
âHumph. Did you check her FaceBook account?â
âYup. I didnât go through everything but from what I saw, thereâs nothing going on. Iâll check again later, though. I didnât want to be on it too long in case she came downstairs.â
Alright, so I felt a little bad for telling Mel I didnât think heâd check it, but I didnât admit that to him. What he didnât know wouldnât come back to bite me in the butt. âCool. Thanks for checking. Iâm going to put this stuff away and go talk to her. Is Josh at the basketball courts?â
âNope. Heâs in his room playing Legos.â
âOh. Not helping with the yard?â
âHe mowed the back so I told him Iâd do the front. I donât feel like dealing with work crap today.â
âCool." I carried arms full of groceries into the house. Jake followed behind with the rest of the bags. I loved that he helped even when he didn't need to. What a guy. Probably thought this would earn him points for sex later and probably he was right.
While putting the groceries away, Ma popped in. Literally. I jumped and dropped the bag of groceries on the floor. Yogurt containers splattered and rolled around and I chased after them. âCheese and rice, Ma! Donât scare me like that.â
She was surprised. âWhaddya you mean scare you? I didnât say boo or anything.â
âDonât be a smarty pants. You know what I mean.â I grabbed a handful of paper towels and wiped up the splattered yogurt. Of course it was mine that splattered. âYou canât just pop in in front of me like that, Ma. It scares the crap out of me, and I donât want to freak out and have Emily hear me, you know?â
âOh, fine. Ruin all of my fun.â She frowned and huffed.
I giggled and put away the rest of the groceries.
âIâm proud of you, Ang.â
âAnd youâve decided to finally tell me this after youâve died, because why?â
She threw her hands up in the air. âAh Madone. Iâve told you Iâm proud of you before, so donât act like I never did.â
I laughed out loud. âI know. Iâm kidding. What are you proud of me for, Ma?â I put the cereal in the pantry and pretended like I didnât actually need to hear what she was proud about when really I still loved when I made her proud.
âI saw what you did for that woman at Starbucks today. You did good, Ang. You did good.â
I stopped putting the groceries away and peered at my mom. âWhat do you mean, you saw?â
Her head dropped.
