Chapter Four: Brad

“Next item up for bid, a safety basket donated by Goldcrest Fire Station and delivered to you by these handsome firemen,” the announcer says into the microphone. “Bidding starts at five hundred dollars.”

My partner and I hold up the basket so everyone in the room can see it. My eyes run over the people and I smile wide when I see Mariah in the back waving at me from behind her chair. I can’t believe my little plan to get her to go out with me actually worked. Tomorrow’s going to be a great day.

We raise the basket higher expecting to get several bids, but I raise a curious brow when the crowd falls silent.

“Come on people,” the announcer chimes in with a pep in her tone. “You know you want to bid on this one-of-a-kind basket from your favorite local heroes. Let’s hear five hundred dollars to start the bidding.”

The room’s so silent I can hear the crickets chirping outside. Beads of sweat form along Captain’s forehead and in the area between his nose and mustache. It’s a bit embarrassing for our fire station to have not one bidder, especially since the bidding war before ours was for a basket of jewelry for pets. That basket raised twenty-seven thousand dollars and we can’t get a single bidder at five hundred.

Captain leans over and whispers something in the announcer’s ear and she smiles. She brings the microphone to her lips and says, “It’s come to my attention, a new addition was just added to this basket.”

Curious to hear what the captain came up with, I smile wide at the crowd as I listen closely to the announcer. “Open your wallets, purses, and pocketbooks because this basket now comes with a date. Tomorrow only, one of the handsome firemen standing up here on stage could be yours to go out with.”

What?

Darting my eyes at Captain, I furrow my brows. This was not part of the plan. But before I can get Captain’s attention, the announcer continues.

“If you get the basket, you get to choose one of these charming men to take you on a date. Do I hear—”

“One thousand dollars,” a woman shouts from the front, cutting the announcer off as she raises her paddle high in the air.

“Two thousand,” another woman calls out from the back.

The auctioneer takes over for the announcer and rapidly calls out bids as the prices get higher and higher. “Five thousand, do I hear ten? Ten thousand, to lady in the back. Do I hear eleven?”

“Fifteen thousand!”

“Sixteen!”

“Sixteen thousand five hundred!”

The numbers grow large so quickly, I can hardly believe my eyes and ears.

“Thirty thousand dollars!”

A woman stands up in the middle of the room and the crowd oohs and ahs.

“Thirty thousand going once… going twice… sold to the lady in the center for thirty thousand dollars,” the auctioneer says as he slams his gavel and points to the elegantly dressed woman in the crowd.

People clap as the woman smiles proudly.

“Congratulations, paddle owner number four-fifty-two.
