CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Late Night Visitor

A knocking rouses me from a light sleep.

I’m still beneath Kendra. She stirs. Shit. I’d hoped we could sleep through the night like this. It would have felt symbolic of a future living together in perfect harmony. But no. Something has to disturb us. It better not be my ghosts.

The knocking comes again, insistent. Someone’s outside my hotel room door at two in the morning.

“You expecting someone?” Kendra murmurs. Dammit, the knocking woke her. Whoever it is better have a damned good reason for being here.

“I’m not expecting anyone, and I hate that they woke you.”

The knocking becomes a pounding.

“You better answer it before they wake everyone in the hotel.” Kendra rolls off me and pulls a sheet over her nakedness.

I use a crutch to snag my jeans. The pounding at the door comes twice more before I can get my cast through the pants leg and the jeans pulled up to my waist. Using only one crutch, I go to the door and peek through the peephole. The identity of my visitor steals my breath, as she’s done before. “It’s Yvette. What the hell is she doing here? She should be on her honeymoon.”

Yvette pounds on my door again. She’s not going away. The door across the hall opens and an old man sticks his head out. His mouth moves, no doubt to voice his displeasure with Yvette.

Kendra sits up in bed, covering her breasts with a sheet and anchoring it under her armpits. “Let the poor girl in and see what she wants.”

“She wants to strangle me, from the look of her.” I undo the bolt locks and turn the door knob.

The force of her entry throws me off balance, and I crash to the floor, landing on my butt. Pain stabs my right ankle. “What the hell, Yvette?”

“You didn’t return my calls.” Consternation dominates her expression as she realizes she’s knocked me down, but only for the instant before she spots Kendra in my bed. Her chin juts. “I see why.” She kicks my cast. “Dammit, Nick. Dammit all to hell.” Tears well in her eyes. She wipes them away and turns her back to me, like she’s leaving the room as soon as she’s entered. “Why did you come to my wedding and say what you said if you didn’t mean it?”

“You told me to get lost, Yvette. I thought you wanted me to leave. So I did.”

She turns to face me again, tears threatening to roll down her cheeks. “I wanted you to fight for me, Nick. I wanted everyone there to see how badly you wanted me. You started out saying all the right things, but then you just gave up. You chickened out, tucked your tail between your legs and ran off with some woman I don’t even know.” She keeps her eyes on me, wiping away another tear as it forms.

“What you said to me felt really mean, Yvette. I’m sorry if I misunderstood, but I thought you’d made up your mind to marry Carlos, and nothing I could say would change it.
