CHAPTER NINE

“Let’s go over this again.”

“Is that really necessary?” I eyed Anthony Finch, the Internal Affairs Officer, from where I was sitting at the interrogation table. Frowning, he drummed his fingers repeatedly against his folded arms. “We’ve been at this for two hours.”

“If you want to be released, Ms. Wilkins, we’ll go over this as many times as is needed.”

With a sigh, I propped my elbows onto the table and rested my chin on my hands.

“Tell me again why you were at Sergei Romanov’s club with Henry Jackson.”

“Let’s get one thing straight right away. I wasn’t with Henry Jackson.” I repeated my made-up story for what felt like the hundredth time. “I was in the neighborhood. I thought I saw suspicious activity. Upon seeing Henry’s vehicle, I parked my car and approached the club.”

“You just happened to be in the neighborhood?”

“That’s what I said,” I replied calmly, “Again.”

Finch pressed his hands against the table and leaned his face close to mine. “And upon entering the club, you just happened to go upstairs and find Romanov’s dead body.”

I leaned in as well to bring our faces even closer together. “That’s correct.”

“When exactly did Eric Mason attack you?”

“I was examining the body when he came at me.”

“And that’s when Henry Jackson shot him four times?”

I placed my hands flat on the table. “It all happened rather quickly, but yes, that’s what happened.” I began to trace circles on the table as if bored, and truth be told for once, I was. It would be so easy to toy with the man, but I was tired. Besides, I had to save my strength for Hurricane Johnny brewing outside in the hall. “We checked to make sure he was dead then we called it into dispatch.”

“What’s the extent of your relationship with Mr. Jackson?”

“There is no relationship.”

“So, you wouldn’t consider him a friend?” Finch smiled down at me. “You wouldn’t help him out in a tough situation or say, cover for him?”

I chuckled and rocked back in the chair. “They must teach you suits the art of grabbing at straws at the academy. A friend? I guess you could call him that; he’s my fiancé’s best friend, so tolerance is kind of non-negotiable. As for covering for him, I don’t know of a single reason why I would need to do anything like that.” I reached out to tug at Finch’s tie. “That’s a no, just in case that’s unclear to you.”

“Don’t act coy, Ms. Wilkins. It won’t help you get out of here any faster.”

“Why the rush? Maybe I’m enjoying your company,” I smirked. “Or maybe I like hanging around answering stupid, pointless questions that you already know the answers to.” I leaned back again in my chair. “Unless you’re going to charge me with something, it’s time to stop the Q&A before I request a lawyer. I’ve been tolerating this song and dance long enough.”

The door of the interrogation room swung open, and Finch stepped back as Director Malone entered, Adrian following behind him.
