Chapter 15

Irrespective of Rank

Although the Victoria Cross was created explicitly to reward valour regardless of rank, there was from the beginning a reluctance to award it to commanding officers. It was not a question of such officers being remote from situations where valour might be displayed. During the Persian War of 1856–7 Captain John Forbes led his 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry from the front. At Khoosh-ab the regiment performed the remarkable feat of breaking into and destroying an infantry square. Lieutenant Arthur Moore had jumped his horse over the enemy bayonets. The horse fell dead, breaking Moore’s sword, and he would have been killed had not Lieutenant John Malcolmson also broken in and carried the dismounted man away at his stirrup.
