Ant and
the Dove
Once upon a time, in a forest not far away from a certain village, lived a dove and an ant. Ant was tiny and was one of the doveâs favourite snacks. Ant would hide in his hole and would come out only when dove has got to the other side of the forest to hunt. He will climb up the tree looking for fruits to suck juices from and some nuts to carry to his hole and keep in store. He will be very vigilant looking out for dove and other birds not to find her and eat her. One-day dove was resting in her nest and the ant was not aware of her. He came out of her hole to find some food near the tree that dove lived in. dove saw her and observed how and fearfully and carefully walk about, making sure she does not attract anyoneâs attention.
Dove spoke softly from her nest and said to the ant, âHello little friend, where do you come from? Do you know it is not safe for you to be walking in this for-
est alone?â Ant was startled. She stopped walking and humbly put her hands together like she was praying; âPlease, I beg of you, do not hurt me or eat me, I was only looking for pieces of nuts that fell off when you were feeding your babies, I just wanted to take them to my storeroom so that when drought comes, I will have enough to feed me and my children.â Dove looked at ant sympathetically and said to him; âDo not worry, I will not eat you. In fact, I want you to be my friend. We can keep each other company in this forest, it very lonely.â Ant happily agreed to the offer. They spend some time talking and introducing themselves before and went back to her hole relieved.
One day as the dove was perched on a branch of a tree enjoying the morning sun, she spotted ant going towards a spring of water in search of food. It was chilly and ant was looking for something that could warm them up, something sweet and juicy. As she was about to pass the spring of water, she slipped and fell into the spring. She struggled because she could not swim and the water was too deep. Dove witnessed this from the tree above the spring. She cut a leave from the branch and threw it into the spring for ant to use it to swim out of the spring. Ant successfully
swam out of the spring and thanked dove for saving her life.
Days went by with dove and ant enjoying their friendship and being neighbours. One-day dove was relaxing in her nest enjoying her afternoon nap while ant was busy searching for more food stuff. A hunter came by and stopped after spotting dove relaxed in her nest. He prepared his gun to shoot down dove. Ant saw the hunter and when she looked up the tree, she realised dove was not aware of the danger she was in.
