Interracial Dating and Marriage

BACKGROUND

In January 1896, authorities found the mutilated body of Aureliano Castellón in San Antonio, Texas. Aureliano made the mistake of courting Emma Stanfield, a white girl, over the objections of her brothers (Carrigan and Webb, 2013). He was shot eight times and his body was burned. Interracial friendships, let alone dating, have been taboo from the beginning of the country’s history. It has only been until recently that it has become commonplace and then only in certain parts of the country.

Legal and social taboos also existed governing relationships between Anglo-Americans and Africans and Indians. Later, there was considerable tension with the Italians, Irish, and Jews. Immigrants often lived next to one other but did not date; when they did, there were problems. The reasons were varied: many Jewish immigrants did not want their daughters and sons to have relationships with Protestants or Catholics because they feared it would lead to intermarriage, lessening their children’s ties to their religion. Catholics and Protestants often felt the same way about each other and about Jews.
