Gavin waited impatiently, rocking back and forth on the edge of the sofa against the wall. He’d been nervous before when meeting a buyer, but this one was different. Something about this entire operation felt off, and it wasn’t just the company he’d picked up along the way. He raised his head enough to lay eyes on the woman. He glowered at her, wishing he could consume her with lasers from his eyes.

It would all be over soon. He had to keep telling himself that. She was just a pawn in all of this, and soon he wouldn’t have to deal with it anymore. Priya would be someone else’s problem. He wondered what they would do to her when they saw her. Knowing some of these types like he did, he wouldn’t be surprised if they took her as one of their sex slaves, either for personal use or to sell on the black market. From what Gavin had heard, human trafficking was a booming business, though he’d never felt good about dipping his toes in that world.

It disgusted him, actually made him feel dirty in a way that no amount of soap and water could wash away. The fact that people were bought and sold in modern times was a sickening and mind-blowing thing to consider. Then again, it had been happening for thousands of years. Slavery had always been around. It never left. It merely put on a new mask and took a new name.

Gavin had never been extremely ethical. He’d done all the drugs, all the ones he could access, in high school. His sex life had started early, as it had with many of his peers, though Gavin ran through a series of young women in a short amount of time, doing more emotional damage to most of them than he could have realized. He justified that by telling himself they knew what they were doing just like he did. On top of all that, he’d cheated through most of school, copying the work of friends or mirroring answers on tests. It wasn’t until later that he got into a life of crime, when he realized that college didn’t have anything to offer a person like him, or rather, a personality such as his.

He craved excitement, thrills, high risk, and high reward.

It probably didn’t help that he’d been the son of wealthy parents. Actual punitive actions against him for anything were never a real threat.

Still, despite all that, there were lines he never crossed.

Gavin never forced himself on a woman. He despised the men that did, even threatened to beat one of them up in high school purely based on a rumor that circulated around the student body. The other boy had acted defensively, much like abusers usually do, but the rumors stopped, and soon after the two split up and started dating other people. The boy eventually transferred to another school, perhaps because of the bad reputation he’d established, whether it was deserving or not.

Through the years, Gavin had heard more and more about the rise of the human sex slave trade.
